Batsugi & Kiriage 19th November

Class began with bōshurikenjutsu before the standard warm of atemi and tanren. After this we examined foundations of tenkai and continued with a detailed examination of Ganseki Nage and related ukemi.

Following on from this we moved onto the kata eleven of the shoden of Kotō Ryū, Batsugi. After looking at the related kihon of kogoroshi and oyagoroshi we practiced the main form and two henka. Class finished with a review of Kiriage of Kukishin Ryū Biken, both the main form and three sayugyaku.

In relation to Kiri Age or ‘rising cut’, the 9th Sōke of Kukishin Ryū famously dispatched an enemy admiral during a naval engagement with such a cut.
